The West will allow Russia to punish Georgia by driving out Georgian military formations and limit themselves to expressing “concern”.

Now that it seems that particular goal has been achieved, the media pressure is now going to be piled on. They will not accept Russian intrusions beyond South Ossetia – greater Georgia is too valuable for them to lose, however much it may deserve to do so.

IMHO, Saakashvili and his men swallowed their own propaganda and believed that Russia wouldn't react militarily, but only with words.
