I’d say this though: even though I’m pretty rootless myself, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else and I’d consider it an enormous tragedy if the whole world one day turned into a boring, gray, rootless and undifferentiated mass.

Or look on it as an asset. The diaspora Jews lack of tribal alleigances can have great benefits. Namely a willingless to embrace different cultures and move around between countries.

And ‘citizens of the world’, yes try ordering a bacon roll in Riyadh. However, all the Saudis flock to Dubai for alcohol and Russian and Central Asian whores, which shows that there are some unifying factors to humanity. But not in the socio/cultural aspect, more thephysical aspect.

I completely agree, although it takes some time and disillusion to get past the slogan. In particular, read “Chasing the Flame” on the life of U.N. diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello on the limits and falsehoods of this kind of “cosmopolitanism”. Given its elitist, American-school/international NGO sort of character, I wonder if this internationalism is more or less hypocritical than the old Marxist chants of mankind being one’s country.

And I remember, I think it was Eric Hobsbawm, writing contemptuously of “those who talk about globalization of society do not have children who go to school.”
