This is a post I made on Eugene Khrushchev's blog Friendly Fire on the Russia Today website regarding what I predicted would happen and been saying for years there is a major increase of Islamic activity through out the Eurasian sphere and eventual push of USNATO forces into Central Asia.

A good article about the rapid increase of militant activity in Eurasia.

“Thus we`ll face a «real threat of growing Islamic sentiments and terror activity in Russia's southern borders - in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan) and in Russia's North Caucasus (Chechnya, North Ossetia, Dagestan)».

Notably, we've been witnessing the gravest crime situation in Central Asia since this May, especially in Uzbekistan where the number of terror attacks and armed clashes have risen sharply in recent months. In case thousands of militants return to Uzbekistan, separate clashes may grow into a guerrilla war like the one during the civil war in Tajikistan”

http://en.fondsk.ru/article.php?id=2544

I agree with Bianca I don't think this is just a series of bad policy decision by the US over the years since the collapse of the USSR starting in the Balkans I think this is an overall strategy

If the want to stop Afghan drug trade then why did the support and train the KLA to takeover Kosovo help create Albanian drug and organised crime networks in Europe and give them a free hand by giving them independence which they would not be able to operate freely without US support.

I think this is to push them into Central Asia from Afghanistan to destabilise the region with the Islamist announcing a major push and using its resources to destabilise Xinjing cutting of a strategic oil transit route from Kazakhstan to China.

http://en.fondsk.ru/article.php?id=2530

If Uzbekistan is destabilised will people finally see the connection to TGC?

"Uzbekistan, nationally the most vital and the most populous of the central Asian states, represents the major obstacle to any renewed Russian control over the region. Its independence is critical to the survival of the other Central Asian states, and it is the least vulnerable to Russian pressures." (p. 121)

"Uzbekistan is, in fact, the prime candidate for regional leadership in Central Asia." (p.130)

In fact, an Islamic revival - already abetted from the outside not only by Iran but also by Saudi Arabia - is likely to become the mobilizing impulse for the increasingly pervasive new nationalisms, determined to oppose any reintegration under Russian - and hence infidel - control." (p. 133).

As there are reports Uzbek militants are running air flights into Pakistan.

http://en.fondsk.ru/article.php?id=2476&search=uzbek

@Michael Averko

But he is not merely a political commentator and adviser for the past 3 decades he and his associates like Khalizad and Soros and his own family members have been at the forefront in critical position of pushing and enacting a publicly stated policy towards Russia.

The "Old Europe" term which (if I'm not mistaken) Rumsfeld coined has been incompletely/inaccurately utilized by neocon and some neolib spinsters.

Brzezinski's geo-political comments about and against Russia are often periodically along the lines of a traditional arch Polish nationalist. The likes of Brzezinski favor the Mazepas, Petliuras and Yushchenkos for seeking to align more towards Poland and away from Russia. Never mind that many on Ukrainian territory don't share a fear and/or hatred of Russia.

A few years ago, Brzezinski expressed a seemingly approving support for the breakup of the Russian Federation. Russia's lengthy period of having acquired land isn't the exclusive result of sheer power alone. This point relates to no Russian republic presently seeking to leave Russia as some territories outside Russia have shown an interest in rejoining Russia.

Brzezinski has said that in the long run, Russia will be more in sync with the West. His basis for this view is under the impression that such a move will be out of desperation on the part of Russia. On the other hand, I'm of the impression that Russia and the West might very well move closer to each other as a result of a greater mutual respect - inclusive of the recognition of Russia's legitimate interests - while keeping in mind that the West isn't a monolithic entity.

@Anatoly Karlin

But you are forgetting the demographic shift in the future in Russia via Muslim higher birth rates.

The Finnish Department of Defence has released a 145 page report on Russia back in February called “Islam – From Russia of Challenges”.

Islam and Muslims in Russia pose a serious challenge to Russia’s internal stability and domestic policy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the self-esteem and sense of identity of Russia’s 20 million Muslims have been bolstered. In 1991 there were approximately 300 mosques in Russia; the present number approaches 8 000. Half of the new mosques have been built with foreign financing, mainly from Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia. In 1991 there were no Islamic schools in the Russian Federation. Now there are approximately 60 madrassas, attended by some 50 000 students. Percentage wiseee, the largest Muslim populations are in the Volga-Ural region, Bashkorstan, Tatarstan, the North Caucasus and the Karelian Republic. In the Karelian Republic there are some 20 000 Muslims (3 % of the population).32
Another striking statistic is related to the growth of Russia’s Muslim population. Russia is about to face big demographic challenges. Russia’s population is diminishing by approximately 400 000 persons per year; yet, the population in 15 Russian regions increased in 2005. Each of them, such as Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetya in the North Caucasus has sizeable Muslim populations. The life expectancy among Muslim males is far greater than that of ethnic Russians.33 Paul Goble, an expert of Islam and the Muslim population in Russia, estimates that the majority of Russian military recruits will be Muslims in 2015. In 2020 twenty per cent of the citizens will be Muslims, provided that the current demographic trends continue. If no changes occur, within three decades the majority of the citizens of the Russian Federation will be Muslims.

They already have extensive links to organised crime gangs in Russia's major cities and regions and internationally as well as open conduits to terrorist front NGO's Europe, North America and the Middle East and open recruitment from mosques.

The September the 11th hijackers with links to numerous foreign intelligence agencies with Atta having contact with US army bases and CIA flight schools while in Florida .

They have been taught how to make chemical, radiological and biological weapons with the potential to cause mass civilian casualties.

You can't understand the full extent of this thing until you read Paul Murphy's book Wolves of Islam the only full time expert on Chechen lead terrorism. .

You're not going to get good info from Stratfor on this issue.

Do you not think it is a little odd that the events transcribed in the the book of spheres of influence and strategic importance to the US exactly match areas of conflict and US military presence with the people in key important people affiliated with Brezinski or organisations like AEI directing this policy that we are currently in now?

Do you not think it is a little odd that the events transcribed in the the book of spheres of influence and strategic importance to the US exactly match areas of conflict and US military presence with the people in key important people affiliated with Brezinski or organisations like AEI directing this policy that we are currently in now?

And the policy is not just targeted towards Russia although that is its primary target but a possible strategic alliance between the big 3 as he calls them Russia, China and India all of which face an Islamic insurgency.

@Greg

What Brezinski wants is the fragmentation and destruction of Russia just like the did to Yugoslavia during the 90's with Russia being split into 3 separate countries which he mentions in his book as the former Yugoslavia being the model with the same network, organisations and individuals involved of the break up of Yugoslavia are involved in policy of supporting Chechen lead separatist groups in Russia as well as Xinjing in China and Islamic groups in Central Asian Republics who are all interconnected and all fought in Chechnya.

This is not going to be done with Russia's willing consent so like Communism before it with the Bolshevik revolution they will economic/political pressure and terrorism and bring about a state of mass civil unrest.

@solar sun,

Yes, I've heard of the Grey Wolves. An ultra-nationalist Turkish organization, probably formed as part of the CIA's Operation Gladio, to suppress pro-Communist tendencies. Part of Turkey's "deep state" and now more interested in building a pan-Turkic empire. This would, of course, bring them into conflict with Russia, hence why certain interested parties like Brzezinski / the Prometheans and elements of the Anglo-Saxon intelligence services would want to if not to directly cooperate with them, at least make sure that they are free to roam.

But... aggravating as this might be, the scale of the challenge is small relative to other factors (ideological competitiveness, military might, etc). As long as the traditional pillars of Russian strength remain steady, their activities are of minimal strategic significance (furthermore, Turkey does not even have the hard power to capitalize on this).

@ Greg,

I agree with Brzezinski too. His ideas are indeed little more than simplistic descendants of Mackinder's pioneering work on geopolitics, which remains valid today - hence the US habit of making amphibious spoiling attacks to preempt the rise of a Eurasian hegemon. The US is not nasty or immoral for doing, it is simply following its (amoral) national interests, like most other states.

Re-demography. There are reasons for thinking the situation is not as bad as commonly presented, though it is certainly nothing to write home about. I would say it is still better off than the true demographic disaster zones (Germania, the Christian Mediterranean, Japan), i.e. it's demographic collapse occurred in the early 1990's, instead of in the early 1970's for the aforementioned, so there's relatively more room for recovery - but it will have to come quick to make a difference. In that sense, the rapid improvements in the TFR from 2006 are encouraging.

However, one thing I am certain on is that China is not going to make significant inroads into the Russian Far East except in economic penetration. Ordinary Chinese simply have no desire to swarm across the Amur, try to eke out a subsistence existence in hidden farms in the Siberian fastnesses and populate the region with Chinese. Not going to happen. Call me when China acquires an effective ABM system (to counter Russia's vast nuclear superiority) is approaching a Malthusian crisis (giving it an incentive). It's a distinct possibility in 30 years, but not anytime soon.

Central Asia is of course an easier nut to crack than the Russian Far East, relatively speaking, but their societies were heavily influenced by Russian culture, cultural / political ties remain strong, Russia has the biggest military presence there of any foreign Power, most of their energy export routes pass through Russia (will change if Iran turns pro-West) and their energy/industrial systems are interwoven with Russia's (Soviet legacy). Separated from it by a desert and a mountain range, and facing competition from Russia, Turkey, Iran?, and the US, China is going to have a hell of a task achieving preeminence there.

IMO, the real threat from a continuation of Russia's demographic decline, e.g. if the TFR falls back down to around 1.3 like it was in 1994-2006, is in its effect on Russia's economy. On the one hand, a brake on productivity growth, less innovation, etc; on the other, mounting pensions and medical costs (especially pertinent if the Russian government continues its recent trend of revamping the social security system, which seems likely).

@solar sun

I tend to be sympathetic to Brzezinski's view actually. I respect Russia a great deal as I admire their toughness. Not many nations have been invaded by Mongols, Napoleon, and Hitler.

That said, I generally believe that it is manifestly not in American interests to have a single Eurasian power gain too much ascendency. That is why I asked whether "Brzezinski's thesis is completely wrong, or whether it would need to be updated to account for a revival in Russia?"

It was intended as a device, but I will make no bones that I am a supporter of managing Russia's rise adeptly. I am not certain we need to continue expanding NATO to include Georgia or Ukraine. However, I also think finding alternative energy corridors to Europe is wise, as is maintaining a robust Central Asian presence. I tend to think, perhaps in contradiction to our host, that Russia's demographic challenges will cause them to decline over the long-term (say 30-40 years) and facilitate an unintentional Chinese push west. It may not result in de jure changes in borders, but it may result in de facto changes.

In the interim, the U.S. should not be overly bellicose, but it cannot ignore the geopolitical importance of Central Asia, Russia's role in Central Asia, and, for that matter, China's growing role in Central Asia.

@GregRLawson

I think you missed key points outlined in TGC where I quoted his writing above where he outlines the purpose of his book.

"... But in the meantime, it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book.” (p. xiv)"

And Brzezinski was dead set against US involvement in Iraq for good reason because a) it would be lengthily costly guerrilla warfare and b) networks and tactics created /developed during the 90’s from Europe and the Middle East through Bosnia and Kosovo though Turkey and Azerbaijan into Chechnya are being redirected by foreign Jihadist leaders to fight in Iraq like the case of the Bosnian Jihadist Juda the sniper and Chechens killed fighting British forces in Iraq

I will need to look for the article again but the UN headquarters bombing was a result of foreign jihadists intended to travel to Chechnya being redirected to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi the Jordanian/Chechen terrorist in Iraq.

And noticed how the same techniques used in Chechnya (female suicide bombers, kidnappings, etc) have been adapted in Iraq.

Most of Europe’s future energy reserves still have to come from Russia through Russian territory with an estimated $1 trillion dollars in the Caspian basin which Russia’s Dagestan region borders hence why since 89 foreign Jihadist spiritual leaders flooded into the region (Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Al Qaeda in Iraq leaders cousin was a senior council member of Islamic Council od Degestan in 93) and the wars in Chechnya which isn’t really about Chechnya at all but a base via proxy to destabilise the region and annex Dagestan. The same can be said of Georgia hence the real reason behind the Georgian conflict in August 2008.

I could also list the various Brezinski family members and Zbig himself in senior positions directing policy against Russia in Europe.
Zbig himself the director or former director of ACPC who also successfully lobbied for Ilyas Khamzatovich Akhmadov asylum and citizenship into the US in 2003 and senior NED scholar with full health care, accommodation, “research grants” and health care benefits which Zbig called 'One Of The Happiest Days Of My Life'.

There’s also Mathew who is Ilyas handler in the US and writes favourable opt-ed pieces in the WSJ, Ian in charge of NATO’s East European affairs under the Bush administration and Mark who oversaw the Orange revolution in Ukraine.

Then there is also Brezinskis affiliates that worked with since the Afghan war and post Soviet Europe like Khalizad, Gates and George Soros and there various positions.

I agree that Brzezinski's book is dated. Russia is certainly newly reascendent in the region in many ways. That said, is not the U.S. strategy still to keep Russia in check. Afterall, is not Eurasia still the "Heartland" in the Mackinder sense? Not sure I subscribe to this, but it raises a question whether Brzezinski's thesis is completely wrong, or whether it would need to be updated to account for a revival in Russia.

@Anatoly Karlin

I will read over your Shifting Winds article and comment later on your opinions.

As for Stratfor I don't think they are an impartial geo-political analysis at least in some of there analysis and I will give examples in a future comment.

Are you familiar with the real events of what transpired during the Balkans wars during the 90’s.
Did you follow the Milosevic trail in The Hague or events and foreign involvement that contributed to the break-up of Yugoslavia?
This has a direct bearing on Russia and with out this backdrop you can’t understand the full extent of the Chechen conflict and the post Cold War sphere.

I could go on at length refuting this assertion which I will talk about later with Istanbul being the centre of Chechen terrorism and organisations.
Do you know who the Grey Wolves are?

Ankara is to the Chechen terrorist/separatists movement what New York was to Pale of Settlement Marxist terrorist movements.

Revelations were from FBI whistle blower Sidel Edmonds. The article merely elaborates on her revelations on phone conversations she overheard between Turkish and Israeli officials among other things.

Actually this is a topic I will be commenting on most in the future which is long and quite complex.

Thank you for participating, solar sun.

My 2 cents on Brzezinski's Grand Chessboard. It was published in 1998, at the nadir of Russia's power and the height of US triumphalism. Several realities held then:

1) Russia was weak
2) The US was strong and could expand into eastern Europe and central Asia - Russia's traditional spheres of influence - with ease.
3) Central Asia was believed to hold energy resources dwarfing those of the Middle East.

These are all no longer valid. Russia is resurging across the post-Soviet space (no longer the "Black Hole" Brzezinski describes it as in his book), whereas the US is bogged down in Afghanistan and faces a challenge from Iran (as well as wider economic and energy-related challenges covered in my article Shifting Winds). Likewise, Russia has reasserted its influence over Central Asia; even the most independent-minded, Uzbekistan, terminated the US base there in 2005, and is being contained by Russia within the region with arms sales to Turkmenistan and constructing bases in neighboring Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Simultaneously, prospectors discovered that Central Asia wasn't really the new energy El Dorado, with reserves there being modest and hard to get; the real prize was still in the Middle East. Hence, in conclusion The Grand Chessboard is rather dated as a realistic blueprint for US strategy towards Eurasia.

Perhaps elements of the US intelligence services, with the participation of Turkish and Saudi colleagues, do support Chechen separatism and Islamism in Azerbaijan and Central Asia in a bid to weaken Moscow's influence there. That said, even if your sources are correct (they are of a very conspiratorial character which means their veracity is hard to gauge), the sums they're talking about - e.g. a few missing tens of millions of $ in building mosques - cannot by themselves achieve any drastic reversal of the situation in favor of the US.

Just registered and logged in I will do an in depth critique of Brezinski and the The Grand Chessboard a person and policy since the Mid 70’s has been directing US and global policy against Russia and direct and redefining and constructing the post Cold war order in Europe and Eurasia against Russia and independent energy corridors from away from Russia to European markets.

Here is a link to the pdf of the book with some quotes.

"Ever since the continents started interacting politically, some five hundred years ago, Eurasia has been the center of world power."- (p. xiii)

The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book.” (p. xiv)"
