I started writing a blog in January 2008 as Da Russophile, with the intention of correcting Western misconceptions about Russia and its politics, economy, and demography (see my interview). I made the world’s only translation of the so-called “Stalinist” chapter of Filippov’s (in)famous history textbook – and exposed the biased Western media coverage of the subject. I was also one of the very few Russia-watchers who went against the grain and successfully predicted Russia’s recent demographic rebound. I wrote about many other Russia-related themes including its history, “national idea“, and the nature of Russophobia.
Over time I refocused the blog towards my interlinked interests in geopolitics, energy, and the (non)sustainability of industrial civilization. This became my dominant interest by 2009. My basic thesis is that resource depletion (e.g. peak oil, declining EROEI) and pollution overload (e.g. climate change) are already beginning to constrain industrial growth. Left unchecked – or further accelerated by short-termist politics and resource wars - these limits to growth on our finite planet will result in a global collapse by 2030-50. Our only hopes of averting the worst outcomes, in decreasing order of likelihood, are a “magic bullet” technological solution; an “ecotechnic dictatorship” that will force us back to a sustainable development path below the limits; or a universal values shift away from individual consumerism towards collective, sustainable stewardship of the Earth.
